Antique Steuben Glass Candlestick Repair Broken Crystal Top

Monday, December 12th, 2011 Posted in All Repair Projects, Antique Glass Repair, Crystal Candlestick repair, Steuben Crystal, Steuben Crystal Repair | Comments Off on Antique Steuben Glass Candlestick Repair Broken Crystal Top

The Steuben Crystal Teardrop Candlestick is one of the largest candlesticks they made.  It is very common for people to forget to put out the candles after dinner.   When the candle  burns  down the heat cracks the candle cup.  I have repaired  many of these over the years by making a new candle cup.

Crystal Repair broken frosted glass figurine

Monday, December 5th, 2011 Posted in All Repair Projects, Figurine, Glass Sculpture Repair | Comments Off on Crystal Repair broken frosted glass figurine

The broken  glass leopard is made from  borosilicate glass  ( pyrex ).   This type of glass  has a very low expansion coefficient so it  can be reheated .   There is a small piece missing were the leg broke.

Most pieces of glass can not be fused back together so I use UV cured adhesive .

fusing glass leg

I used a torch and fused the broken glass leg .   I shaped the leg and fill in the area were the chip was missing.   I frosted the area to matched .

Waterford Crystal Repair Broken Lamp

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 Posted in All Repair Projects, Antique lamp repair, Crystal Repair Pictures, Glueings, Waterford Crystal, Waterford Crystal Repair | Comments Off on Waterford Crystal Repair Broken Lamp

The Waterford crystal lamp was  sent to me from Pennsylvania  for repair.  The base of he lamp was broken off and they didn’t have all the pieces .    There was a crack a running up the bottom and I had to carefully control the crack and turn it so it ran back to the bottom.   I didn’t want the crack to run up to the top of the lamp.

Broken Waterford Lamp Base

I looked and found a Waterford Crystal bowl to make the new base out of.

Brioken glass lamp

Cut off broken parts from the bottom of the  lamp.

Crack running up

I loop the crack back down and remove piece so it can be repaired.  The lamp is stable now by controlling the crack we minimized its in-pack.  Little cracks only stay little for awhile.

New base for lamp

Smooth and polish the parts for reassembly .

Hole for lamp cord

Using a Waterford Crystal bowl I made a new base for the lamp complete with Waterford logo.

Drill a large hole in the bowl.

Carnival Glass Depression Glass Pressed Glass bowl repair

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011 Posted in All Repair Projects, Antique Glass Repair, Glueings | Comments Off on Carnival Glass Depression Glass Pressed Glass bowl repair

The bowl was broken in half and in need of restoration.  It was a clean break so I think would guess hot water in the sink was the culprit . This type of repair comes out very good because of the color and texture.  Cracked glass bowls are sent to me all the time.

Antique Crystal Bowl Repair Broken Glass Foot

Monday, April 25th, 2011 Posted in All Repair Projects, Antique Glass Repair, Broken glassware, Glueings | 1 Comment »

This bowl had a place of honor on grandmas dinning room table for over four decades .  There  it sat  with a stack of pennies taking the place of the missing foot. Grandmas birthday is coming up and wouldn’t it be nice to get the bowl repaired .  The local antique  dealers  and glass shops said it couldn’t be repaired .  What they should have said is they can’t repair it and they don’t know any one who can.

Missing Glass Leg

Cut glass bowl with a missing foot.   The leg broke off and was missed placed over forty years ago .

First step in the repair process to remove what was left of the broken leg on the cut crystal bowl.

glass leg

By casting a mold of one of the good  glass legs I was able to make a new glass foot .

Installed new glass foot

We were able to give grandma her pennies back after bonding the new foot to the bottom of the antique glass  bowl

No more pennies

The local “experts ”  got it wrong .  It  can be restored .  The crystal repair projects I work on now come from all over the world.

Crystal repair is now high tech with the use of UV adhesives and high temp molds .  Antique  cut glass bowls like this one are repairable . Crystal repair has come a long way in the last thirty years .

antique crystal light cut glass globe repair

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011 Posted in Antique Glass Repair, Antique lamp repair | 2 Comments »

The painter broke the globe.  The cut glass globe goes to a  antique ceiling fixture.  It came in as a basket case.  I taped it together to see if we had all the pieces.

The adhesive is stronger than glass .  After repairing the globe I frosted the glass to remove all of the glue and hide the repair.

Antique clock glass repair beveled glass in bezel

Saturday, March 26th, 2011 Posted in Beveled Glass, Beveled Glass Lens, Clock Glass, Clocks | 1 Comment »

The antique  clock sat on  the mantel since the beginning of time . One of the kids went to wind the clock and broke the glass .   I save old glass for clocks like this.  New glass is a different color green and is very flat.  The antique glass has a yellow hue and a distorted finish.  Sometimes the antique glass  has bubbles and blisters .  This is important when it comes to the value of the clock.  An antique  clock with new glass doesn’t retain its resale price.

I have antique beveling machines that run on leather belts.  The same type used to make this antique beveled glass lens originally.  The fitting of the antique replacement beveled glass in the bezel  is very tricky.  The tolerances are with in thousands of an inch.  I make replacement beveled  clock glass for clock shops all over the the country  most of them in New York and LA.
