Crystal Repair Antique Cut Glass Dishes by Fry

The H. C. Fry Glass company made beautiful cut glass . Henry Fry had the biggest and one of the best cutting rooms of the day . The factory was built in 1901 .   The three plates pictured here came for that cutting room in Rochester Penna. They were chipped and needed minor repairs.  Crystal repair on the best of the best is a very rewarding.

The saw tooth design is very easy to chip. I used small grinding stones that came from the Hawkes Glass Company in Corning NY to grind out the chips.

Then with cork , horse hair and felt wheels I polished the cystal back to a brilliant shine.

Crystal Repair Waterford Candy Dish

Saturday, January 2nd, 2010 Posted in All Repair Projects, Chipped Glass Repair, Waterford Crystal Repair | Comments Off on Crystal Repair Waterford Candy Dish

The cover of the Waterford Crystal candy dish had a large chip in it. I was able to repair it by grinding  and polishing out the chip but the lid didn’t fit any more it was very loose. I needed to make the lid a smaller diameter. I cut a piece of crystal the right size and ground in a taper like on a stopper.

Crystal Repair antique cut glass epergne

Broken cut glass

The antique cut crystal piece was broken and apiece was missing. I knew I would have to make a new pedal. Antique glass comes in many colors even the clear “crystal” glass. I found in my parts department a piece of antique glass the right color and shape for this repair. I ground and polished the new pedal. Crystal repair is challenging. With the replace pedal finished I beveled the side of the bowl so I would get a good bond. Then cut in the thumb prints design. Being able to grind and polish a piece of glass that been bonded together speaks well of the strength of the adhesive. This repair job came from Pittsburgh Pa. from a very nice lady. Who I quote ” it’s not a bad drive two hours tops a little shopping lunch and were on our way home. Many customers are surprised what kind of damaged crystal can be restored. Most clients after using my services say I didn’t know that could be repaired. I threw away a lot of glass that could have been repaired. I wish I knew about you.

Very old cut crystal compote came in with a large chip on the foot or base. I cut off the base and made it thinner.  With  a diamond saw I cut off the chipped part. Then  I ground it smooth and polished it.

glass repair testimonial

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009 Posted in All Repair Projects, Broken glassware, Broken Stem, Chipped Glass Repair, Testimonials, Waterford Crystal Repair | Comments Off on glass repair testimonial

I am writing the following to attest to the great skill of the Bruening Glass Works, Inc. personnel.  Several months ago my wife, while filling a Waterford Crystal vase with clean water, accidently tapped the base of the vase against the sink. The base separated from the body of the vase and sustained a substantial chip when it landed in the sink.  We immediately called the jewelry store from where the vase was purchased to ask about its repair.  They referred us to an outfit in Los Angeles, CA.  We were told to send an email with pictures, and we would be instructed on how to proceed.  Several months and six emails later I still had not heard a word from the California outfit.  So, I did a goggle search for Waterford Crystal repair and the Bruening Glass Works, Inc. was one of the first entries.  Being there were some nice testimonials, I emailed Marc at Bruening Glass.  He responded immediately,  and based upon our conversations (both email & telephone) we shipped our vase to him.  In all honesty, we did not expect that much of anything could be done — we just wanted the vase to stand upright & hold flowers.  We had written it off as far as it looking really nice ever again.  We were extremely pleased and surprised when the vase was returned to us a couple of weeks later.  Knowing what March had told us about the repair, we knew it would be a little shorter than when it was new (the broken parts had to be ground down a bit).  Other than that, there was no evidence of any repair work. As far as we are concerned the vase is as good as new — the work is unbelievably good!!!  In short, please do not hesitate to enlist the services of Bruening Glass Works, Inc.  The craftsmanship is superb, its prices are reasonable, and the service is top-notch.

Thanks Marc for doing such remarkable work on an impossible repair.

Antique Glass Repair broken dish

Thursday, May 7th, 2009 Posted in All Repair Projects, Antique Glass Repair, Blowen Glass Replacements, Chipped Glass Repair, Chipped Glassware, Glueings | Comments Off on Antique Glass Repair broken dish

I was sent an antique pressed glass butter dish that was missing a corner. The note with the broken glass dish read “Please do something.” I was able to do more than “something,” the dish is now completely restored. Here’s what I did, I made a casting of one of the thee remaining corners and created a mold. I then cast glass in to the mold, and came up this a rough glass corner. The grinding and polishing came next, and then I glued the piece in place. One final grind and polish, and now the dish can be used to hold butter, and a lot of memories.

Antique Glass Repair- broken stopper

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 Posted in All Repair Projects, Antique Glass Repair, Blowen Glass Replacements, Broken glassware, Chandelier Repair, Chipped Glass Repair, Stopper Repair | Comments Off on Antique Glass Repair- broken stopper

An antique glass decanter with a broken stopper was brought in for repair. The stopper broke off many years ago and was lost. The owners still had the silver top to the stopper, but a new glass bottom had to be made. I started with a glass rod a little larger than the neck of the decanter. I ground the end of the glass rod to fit the neck of the decanter. I made a stem on top of the stopper through heat and manipulation. This was fitted in to the silver top. The other chips on the bottle were left alone because they all had a story to go with them.

Consolidated Glass Bowl Repair

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 Posted in All Repair Projects, Antique Glass Repair, Chipped Glass Repair, Chipped Glassware | Comments Off on Consolidated Glass Bowl Repair

This green Consolidated Glass bowl came to me with eight chips on inside edge of the rim. A simple repair, I thought, but the easy ones are often harder than you think. This inside chip was tricky to smooth without hitting the inside of the bowl. Polishing required dressing that shade in a wheel, and then redressing the wheel. Finally, the bowl is restored back to it’s original beauty.
